Cloud Atlas

This fall I've been reading David Mitchell's 'Cloud Atlas', bought in London in April 2011. It's a multiple frame story set in different time periods. Historical, futuristic and everything in between. With links between the different stories. A feat of ingenuity but sometimes the links and technical writing skills are too obvious too my taste. Other than that, a good read.

By the time I had finished the book, the movie based on it was shown in cinemas, so Maarten and I went to see it. One of its directors is our favorite, Tom Tykwer. Maarten, who hadn't read the book, found the movie to be hard to understand at times, but enjoyed it anyway. I thought it was okay, but I'm usually not too enthusiastic about movies based on a book. Many of the storylines have been changed, and there's lots of switching back and forth between the stories. Each story had a look and feel of its own, the visuals are good, the music sounds great. And if you leave the cinema confused about all the actors and characters and their changes in race, age and gender, there's always the infographic to refer to:
