MetropolisIn August 2011 we watched the German movie 'Metropolis' from 1927, directed by Fritz Lang. Much of it was thought lost over time but in 2008 a copy of the original directors cut was found in a museum in Argentina. It was restored and listed in Unesco's Memory of the world register. And if Unesco says it's worth it... ;-)It was cool to see, but since it was a silent movie I felt the urge to come up with alternative spoken lines and got into a goofy mood. In my version Freder and Josaphat were lovers and Freder had a hard time choosing between Josaphat and Maria, whilst Joh Fredersen wasn't too happy for his son to be in a relationship with a man (and employee!). Seriously though, the US-version of the movie was shortened and got a different storyline from the German original, which goes to show there's more than one possible storyline for it. Big sets, dramatic acting, naïve. You can't watch it with today's critic eye but it sure has its charm. The wiki says there's a 1984 reconstructed version with a soundtrack by rock artists, I would like to watch that one!
