The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet - David Mitchell

Historical novels are what got me into 'grown-up books' once upon a time. And when they have literary qualities, I still like to read them. Like this one; it was hard to put it away, well written, even though part of the storylines were pretty far-fetched. The sinister cult gave me the feeling that the author felt like he needed to write something horrendous in to keep his readers hooked by reluctant fascination. I could have done without it, the rest of the storylines would have been sufficient to keep me interested.
This was the first time I read something by David Mitchell. His 'Cloud Atlas' stands waiting on one of my shelves.
